As mentioned in the consent form, the purpose of this study will now be disclosed.
This study (titled “Transparency & Trustworthiness”) was designed to test the effect that a level of transparency has on trustworthy behavior. In this study, all participants were assigned to the role of Participant B. Rather than matching you with another real person, Participant A was automated by the experiment. In the first round, Participant A chose to send an amount of 100 to every participant no matter what. In the second round, Participant A (still automated) sent a random amount, with the lower and upper bound determined by how much was sent back in round 1, as well as if round 1 was transparent or not.
To reiterate, you were not matched up with another participant, and your decisions in the study did not influence how much another participant in the study earned. This deception was necessary to reduce the variability of the initial amount that Participant A sent, which will make it easier to determine the effect that transparency has on the amount that Participant B (the role that all participants played) chooses to send back.
Because we are still inviting others to participate in this research study, it is very important that you do not discuss the details or purpose of this study with anyone in order to maintain the integrity of this research project.
As a reminder, you have the right to withdraw from this study, and may do so within 48 hours of the study’s conclusion. Please contact Carson Barningham at carsonbarningham@arizona.edu regarding your intent to withdraw from the study, or with any other relevant questions you may have.
