In this experiment you will be randomly matched with one other participant. Each of you will take on one of two possible roles: the role of Person A or of Person B. You will be randomly assigned to one of these two roles at the beginning of your working task. The other participant randomly matched with you will be assigned the other role.
{{ else }} {{ if session.config.treatment.name == C.FOR }}In this part of the experiment you will be randomly matched with one other participant in every new round. This means, you will never be matched with the same partner for two consecutive rounds.
{{ else }}In this part of the experiment you will be matched with one other participant. This is the same participant, you were matched with in Part 1 of the experiment. The participant you are matched with stays the same for all consecutive rounds.
{{ endif }} {{ endif }}Both of you will see the same die on your screens. The die roll is randomly determined by the computer program. The probability of each number on the die is 1/6, as it should be for any random manual roll with a fair die. Your working task is to truthfully report the number that you see displayed on the die.
{{ if session.config.treatment.name == C.BASE or session.config.treatment.name == C.FOR }}First Person A will report the number. When Person A clicks the “Transmit report” button (see example decision screen for Person A below), Person B receives Person A's report (see example decision screen for Person B below). Person B will see Person A's report and then report the number. When Person B clicks the “Transmit reports” button, both reports will be transmitted for the calculation of the payments Person A and Person B receive.
{{ elif session.config.treatment.name == C.SIM }}Person A and Person B will simultaneously report the number (see example decision screens below). When both click the “Transmit report” button, both reports will be transmitted for the calculation of the payments Person A and Person B receive.
{{ elif session.config.treatment.name == C.IND }}Person A will report the number. When Person A clicks the “Transmit report” button (see example decision screen for Person A below), Person A's report will be transmitted to Person B. Person B can see Person A's report (see example screen for Person B below). When Person B clicks the “Transmit report” button, Person A's report will be transmitted for the calculation of the payments Person A and Person B receive. Person B does not report a number him- or herself.
{{ elif session.config.treatment.name == C.COMM }}Together with the die on the screen, Person A and Person B will see a Button “Start chat” displayed. After both have clicked the button, they enter a chat room for 30 seconds in which they can communicate with each other.
We have to ask you to keep the chat topic on the task at hand and to not disclose any private information about yourself (e.g. your name or phone number)! Otherwise you will be excluded from the experiment and all payments from this experiment will be forfeited.
The chat is terminated automatically after 30 seconds.
Person A and Person B are transferred directly to their respective decision screen.
Afterwards, Person A will then first report the number. When Person A clicks the “Transmit report” button (see example decision screen for Person A below), Person A's report will be transmitted to Person B. Person B will see Person A's report (see example decision screen for Person B below) and then report the number. When Person B clicks the “Transmit reports” button, both reports will be transmitted for the calculation of the payments Person A and Person B receive.
{{ endif }} {{ else }}Your working task in Part 2 of the experiment is the same as in Part 1. You also remain in the same role as in Part 1. If you were Person A in Part 1 you stay in the role of Person A. If you were Person B, you stay in the role of Person B.
The difference to Part 1 of the experiment is that you repeat your working task for 9 rounds. This, means you work on the same working task as in Part 1 for 9 times in a row.

Your payment in Part 1 of this experiment only depends on the report of Person A. Person A and Person B always earn the same amount.
Each participant (Person A and Person B) is paid the reported number in points, for the numbers from one to five. This means if Person A reports 1 each participant is paid 1 point, if Person A reports 2 each participant is paid 2 points, and so on. A report of the number 6 pays zero points to each participant.
Your payment in Part 1 of this experiment only depends on the two reports of Person A and Person B. Person A and Person B always earn the same amount.
Case 1: Report of Person A is equal to the report of Person B
If reports are equal, the reported number is paid in points to each participant (Person A and Person B) for the numbers one to five. This means, if both report 1, each participant is paid 1 point, if both report 2 each participant is paid 2 points, and so on. A report of the number 6 pays zero points to each participant.
Case 2: Report of Person A is not equal to the report of Person B
If the reports of Person A and Person B differ, the payment for both participants is the lower of the payments calculated from each of the reports.
In other words, Person A and Person B each receive the lower payment of the two reports.
On the next screen, you will be asked to answer some comprehension questions, on the experimental procedures. If you have read the instructions thoroughly, please click on “Next” to move to the comprehension questions. You can always return to this screen, by clicking on the “Previous” button on the bottom of the next screen. You will have two opportunities to get the questions correct. If you are unsure, about the answer, please re-read the study instructions. If your second trial is unsuccessful, you will be asked to leave the study prematurely and not be paid for your participation.
{{ else }}Payments for Person A and Person B are calculated the same as in Part 1. At the end of the experiment either Part 1 or Part 2 will be chosen randomly for payment. If Part 2 is chosen for payment, one of the rounds in Part 2 will be randomly selected and paid out. All other rounds are not payoff relevant.
