WHO IS DOING THE STUDY?The people in charge of this study are Prof. Mark Pickup of Simon Fraser University, Department of Political Science, SFU and Prof. Erik Kimbrough, College of Business and Economics, Chapman University.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY?By taking part in this study, we hope to learn about how people make financial decisions. If you are interested in receiving the results of this study, you are welcome to e-mail the investigators at mark.pickup@sfu.ca.
WHERE IS THE STUDY GOING TO TAKE PLACE AND HOW LONG WILL IT LAST?Being in this experiment is optional, but if you choose to participate, you will answer questions make decisions on an online application. This study will take up to 15 minutes to complete.
WHAT WILL YOU BE ASKED TO DO?You will be asked to complete a series of tasks online and answer a couple of survey questions. We ask that you take your time.
WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE RISKS AND DISCOMFORTS?To the best of our knowledge, the things you will be doing have no more risk of harm than you would experience in everyday life. By consenting, you do not waive any rights to legal recourse in the event of research-related harm.
WILL YOU BENEFIT FROM TAKING PART IN THIS STUDY?There is no guarantee that you will get any benefit from taking part in this study. However, some people have experienced satisfaction when asked to mull over their opinions on these sorts of issues. Your willingness to take part, however, may, in the future, help society as a whole better understand this research topic.
DO YOU HAVE TO TAKE PART IN THE STUDY?If you decide to take part in the study, it should be because you really want to volunteer. You will not lose any benefits or rights you would normally have if you choose not to volunteer. You can stop at any time during the study and still keep the benefits and rights you had before volunteering.
IF YOU DON’T WANT TO TAKE PART IN THE STUDY, ARE THERE OTHER CHOICES?If you do not want to be in the study, there are no other choices except not to take part in the study.
WHAT WILL IT COST YOU TO PARTICIPATE?There are no costs associated with taking part in the study.
WILL YOU RECEIVE ANY REWARDS FOR TAKING PART IN THIS STUDY?You will receive a minimum payment of $2.50 (USD) plus the earnings from the decisions you make in the experiment and possibly the decisions of other participants.
WHO WILL SEE THE INFORMATION THAT YOU GIVE?We will make every effort to keep private all research records that identify you to the extent allowed by law. Your information will be combined with information from other people taking part in the study. When we write about the study to share it with other researchers, we will write about the combined information we have gathered. You will not be personally identified in these written materials. We plan on publishing the results of this study in an academic journal. The data will be kept for at least five years. This data is anonymized, meaning there will be no way to identify who you are or what responses you gave. We will deposit the anonymized data so that it is preserved for future use in open access initiatives.
CAN YOUR TAKING PART IN THE STUDY END EARLY?If you decide to take part in the study, you still have the right to decide at any time that you no longer want to continue. You will not be treated differently if you decide to stop taking part in the study. If you do not wish to continue, we will delete any responses you have already provided. You can withdraw before and during the experiment by closing your web browser. Once the experiment is complete, your data cannot be deleted because it will be anonymized.

WHAT HAPPENS TO MY PRIVACY IF I PARTICIPATE IN THE SURVEY?No identifying information will be associated with your responses and since your responses will be anonymized, your privacy will be maintained. Any identifiable information will be destroyed at the completion of the study.
