In contrast to traditional survey questions about hypothetical situations, today, we ask that you make a decision that has consequences for a real-life situation. A few days ago, we recruited a group of Prolific workers to complete the first phase of this study. Each worker was given a fixed participation fee of £{{ session.config.participation_fee_worker }} with the potential to receive experimental units (EU) for themselves and a charity known as {{ session.config.charity }}, depending on their decisions. In addition, the workers were told that a study account would be created for them and {{ session.config.charity }} and any EU accumulated throughout the study would be placed in the respective study account. The first phase of this study was divided into three stages, which we explain in detail below.
In Stage 1, the workers completed two tasks. In each task, workers engaged in a series of puzzles where each correct puzzle they submitted earned them a point towards their score for that task. The higher their score for a given task, the more EU they could place in their study account. After the workers completed both tasks, they were told their performance in each task (correct number of submitted puzzles).
In Stage 2, the workers decided how they would like to be paid for their performance in the two tasks. Specifically, they were given two options which are outlined below:
In Stage 3, the workers were told that another Prolific worker, known as a spectator, would be informed about the initial allocation of EU placed in the study accounts based on their payment decision and be allowed to redistribute EU between the two study accounts in a way in which they see fit.
You are the spectator, and we now want you to choose whether to redistribute the EU between study accounts for the worker and the charity - {{ session.config.charity }}. Your decision is entirely anonymous. The worker and {{ session.config.charity }} will receive the payment you choose within a few days but will not receive any further information.
