In this game, you will manage 10 acres of forest with your home located within this forest. There will be 40 rounds in total. Each round represents 6 years.
In each round you will have the option to:
1. Maintain a defensible space around your home at a cost of $300
2. Implement a prescribed burn at a cost of $400
3. Do nothing at a cost of $0
If you decide to maintain a defensible space, your home will be protected in the event of a fire, but the forest will be destroyed.
If you decide to use a prescribed burn both your home and the forest will be protected in the event of a fire, but the enjoyment you experience from your forest will decrease. A prescribed burn will stop a fire in your forest from spreading to your neighbor's forest.
If you do nothing your home and land will both be destroyed in the event of a fire.
The probability of a fire starting on your land is 1/9. This means that about once every 9 rounds, you should expect to experience a fire.
The probability of a fire starting on your neighbor's land is also 1/9. If a fire starts on or passes to your neighbor's land it will spread to your land if they did not use a prescribed burn.
Depending on your forest's location in the landscape, you will have 2 to 4 neighbors who will each share a border with one edge of your property.
In each round, in the absence of fire or prescribed burn, your enjoyment of your forest is equivalent to receiving $500.
If you undertake a prescribed burn, your enjoyment of your forest is only equivalent to receiving $300.
You receive enjoyment from your home equal to receiving $3000. If it is destroyed by a fire, you receive no enjoyment from your home.
The table below summarizes all possible states of the world:
