Participant Consent
You have been invited to take part in a research study to learn more about whether people make decisions differently under different decision-making procedures. This study will be conducted by He Niu, as a part of his Doctoral Dissertation. His faculty sponsor is Professor Tara Slough.
If you agree to be in this study, you will be asked to do the following:
Participation in this study will involve 5-10 minutes. There are no known risks associated with your participation in this research beyond those of everyday life.
Please note that you will receive incomplete information about the payoff structure for the game, the information might contain noise, and each of you has a different noise level. Later you will know their noise level but not know others’.
Although you will receive no direct benefits, this research may help the investigator understand whether people make decisions differently under different decision-making procedures.
A common problem especially with online experiments is players getting stuck waiting for another player in their group who dropped out or is too slow.
You must stay on task at all times, otherwise you will automatically be disconnected and earn $0.00. You must submit a page before timeout seconds,
or else you will be counted as a dropout. If a worker drops out, the program will end the game. The worker who drops out will not get paid,
while the other two workers will get the base payment but not the bonus. You will receive base payment through Prolific if you finished the tasks
no matter whether your partners drop out or not.
Confidentiality of your research records will be strictly maintained by External Human Intelligence Tasks (HITs) involve recruitment through the Prolific platform,
but link participants to a separate survey posted on an external site. Upon completion of the experiment participants are given a code, which is then entered
into the Prolific HIT to cue payment. When structured in this manner, data from External HITs is not available to Prolific. Researcher will de-identify the
data. The codes linking surveys and IDs will be deleted as soon as possible. Your information from this study will not be used for future research.
Participation in this study is voluntary. You may refuse to participate or withdraw at any time without penalty. For interviews, questionnaires, or surveys,
you have the right to skip or not answer any questions you prefer not to answer.
In the study, you will be asked to answer several comprehension questions to make sure you understand the study. You have three chances for each question. If you failed to give the correct answer for three times, you
will automatically be disconnected and not get paid.
If there is anything about the study or your participation that is unclear or that you do not understand, if you have questions or wish to report a research-related problem, you may contact He Niu at, hn2141@nyu.edu, 19 West 4th Street, New York, NY, 10012, or the faculty sponsor, Tara Slough at, tara.slough@nyu.edu, 19 West 4th Street, New York, NY, 10012.
For questions about your rights as a research participant, you may contact the University Committee on Activities Involving Human Subjects (UCAIHS), New York University, 665 Broadway, Suite 804, New York, New York, 10012, at ask.humansubjects@nyu.edu or (212) 998-4808.
