With Ross and Rachel, Friends took the popular "will they or won't they" sitcom romance dynamic to annoying extremes throughout its 10-year run. Either Ross liked Rachel or Rachel like Ross, but for some reason they could never like each other at the same time.
This led to a lot of stupid cliffhangers, the worst of which was Ross' wedding to Emily that closed Season 4. While exchanging vows, Ross accidentally says Rachel's name instead of Emily's, causing all sorts of drama. Freudian slips happen, but no one's that stupid.
