This one happens almost entirely off screen. It’s one of those moments that could easily become a running gag if Mad Men was a sitcom, but thankfully, it isn’t. Peggy and Pete come up with a harebrained scheme straight out of I Love Lucy. They pay a pair of older women to stage a fight over Sugarberry Ham in a grocery store. The publicity stunt works, and sales of ham increase after the story hits the news. The first pay off reveals that the two pugilists have some animosity left to work out, and when one tries to press charges against the other, Peggy has to come up with both bail money and a bribe to keep them quite. This leads her to an inevitable confrontation with Don, where she has some 'splainin to do, but she leaves with the upper hand because at least her stunt worked. It turns out, this is just the first of a few publicity stunts for the newly minted Sterling, Cooper, Draper and Pryce advertising agency.
