In the series's third episode, we learned the depths Barney would go to be legendary and just how long any given episode could stretch out a gag. Sure, the premise seems awfully sitcom-y, with Barney wanting to lick the Liberty Bell and the comic misunderstandings of Marshall walking in on a gay man patting Lily, but How I Met Your Mother has always straddled that line with aplomb.
