The entire basis of Alcatraz revolves around what Hauser has coined "The Sixty-Three's." In other words, the 256 prisoners and 46 guards who mysteriously vanished from Alcatraz Island on the night of March 20, 1963. While that phenomenon in itself would probably be cause for major scientific research, Hauser wisely keeps his bewilderment in check. After all, he frequently points out that those 256 prisoners just so happened to be considered the worst of the worst the prison system had to offer during that time. Now, they're free and identity-less on the streets of San Francisco.
