Chris: Congratulations, I watched the finale and this season was just gut-wrenching
Kurt: Well thank
you, man. I appreciate that.
Chris: I mean, it was a tour de force and that last
episode was a lot of things I did not see coming. So it was very cool, good
surprises. I've got a whole bunch of questions here and I was going to just get
started. First of all, how much time takes place between the moment Jax is
released from prison to when he calls church into session at the end of episode
14?
Kurt: You mean
the length of our season here? You know, to be honest with you, it's sort of a
nebulous amount of time. It's probably a
couple of months, but we don't really ever specifically mention days, weeks or
months and the show and I do that specifically because I learned from The
Shield if you give audiences specific times it almost distracts. Yeah, but I
would say probably a few months.
Chris: Because it
seemed very compact compared to previous seasons. A side question in terms of
Jax looking to leave SAMCRO. Would he have been forced to blackout his tattoo?
Kurt: If he left
in good standing, yes, he would black out. Like Clay stepping down or retiring,
you wouldn't have to. I think it depends.
If you leave in good standing, I think it's your option. I know guys who
have left clubs in good standing and still maintained the ink. And sometimes
that's really a club-by-club decision whether or not they let members do that.
If you're asked to leave then yes, there's no question about whether or not you
can sport the patch.
Chris: One of the
things we're talking about here in the office is did you guys plot this season
using Jax's journey as a kind of a spine or do you look at it as more of a
perspective of where you want to take the MC?
Kurt: To me it's
really Jax's journey and it is the story of the prince. The interesting thing
about this season is even though Jax is very proactive and had this plan to get
out; there were a lot of machinations and secrets that were swirling around him
as a result of him. So, it was a very
interesting season that the bigger, darker things that were motivating our
other characters that Jax wasn't really privy to until the very end. But I
really look at it in terms of his journey and I figured different points of the
season or series we tend to look at his journey through different eyes. For me,
this season we really saw Jax's journey through the eyes of the women. I
thought it was an interesting way to end this season the way that I did and
just because there's a level of honesty that Jax has now developed with Tara
that he doesn't have with anybody else. Gemma really is the window into Clay
and Tara is the window into Jax, so in a lot of ways I'm telling this badass
story about bikers through the window of the old ladies.
Chris: You kind
of build on that by bringing back Wendy, too.
I did not see it coming, I should have seen it coming I thought. It was
fantastic. I'm a big fan of Drea and she
was looking great, it was awesome.
Kurt: Yeah, she
was so funny. She hated being at the read through because she didn't want to
know what happened because she's such a fan of the show. She refused to read the last script!
