Vanessa James was a Second Lieutenant stationed at Icarus Base that escaped through the Stargate and onto the rogue Ancient vessel Destiny after Icarus was attacked. Vanessa is now one of several people trapped aboard the ship, which takes its passengers on seemingly random journeys across the galaxy. Before being stranded on the Destiny, Vanessa had a romantic liaison with her colleague, Lt. Matthew Scott, though now on board the Destiny, Scott has taken up with senator's daughter Chloe Armstrong - something of a source of tension, to say the least. As one of the few military officers on board the Destiny, Vanessa is often called upon to lead expeditions as the ship hurtles them from one end of the universe to the next.
