Staff Sergeant Barnes is one of two U.S. Army officers involved in a tug of war for the soul of a young private named Chris Taylor during the Vietnam War. Whereas Sergeant Elias is compassionate and fair, Barnes is cold and brutal, not beyond putting a loaded gun to the head of a Vietnamese child when interrogating a local. The tug of war comes to an end when Barnes murders Elias (or so he thinks), a crime that Chris knows he's guilty of committing. Chris eventually avenges the death of Elias by shooting a wounded Barnes in cold blood. If the first casualty of war is innocence, then Barnes has been out in the bush for a long, long time.
