Pinbacker was the captain of the Icarus I, the space vessel sent to re-ignite the dying sun by blowing it up with a bomb the size of Manhattan. The Icarus I failed in its mission and disappeared without a trace. Nine years later, the Icarus II is sent and picks up the Icarus I's distress signal - and the crew finds that there's actually one survivor. Pinbacker is still alive, but he's burnt to a crisp, has gone insane and can only be seen with a series of rapidly-edited flash frames as he yammers on about madness and God. He's also gone completely homicidal, and soon he's running amok and threatening the lives as well as the mission of the crew of the Icarus II. It's hard to blow up the sun.
