Paul Sheldon is a world-famous novelist, the author of an extremely popular series of romance novels featuring the melancholy heroine known as Misery Chastaine. Paul's ready to move on, though, and has just finished his last Misery novel, in which his lead character is killed off. Paul packs up the manuscript and heads into a blizzard, attempting to drive from Silver Creek, Colorado to his publisher in New York City. Paul gets into a serious accident but is rescued by Annie Wilkes, who nurses Paul back to health in her secluded home in the Colorado Mountains. When Annie finds out that her beloved Misery has been killed off, Paul's "number one fan" reveals her true nature - that of a raving manipulative psychotic who proceeds to subject Paul to a series of physical and psychological attacks. She burns the manuscript and forces her crippled "guest" to write a new book, and Paul must find a way to outwit and overcome his crazy captor.
