Dr. Norm Spellman was part of Dr. Grace Augustine's team of scientists on Pandora, an anthropologist fascinated by - and very knowledgeable in - the Na'vi culture. Norm claims to have logged over 520 hours of simulation time and studied the Na'vi language for over five years in preparation for bonding with his avatar - so it's understandable that he's rather envious and indignant when Jake Sully, who had no training or schooling whatsoever, was promptly "adopted" by the Na'vi Omaticaya clan. Norm eventually got over his jealousy and ended up tutoring Jake in Na'vi customs - he was also one of the few humans allowed to stay on Pandora after the Na'vi were victorious against the RDA.
