Max Payne is a New York City detective haunted by the brutal murder of his wife and child. Once a loving husband and father and a decorated hero, Max is now a sullen ghost of his former self, obsessed with finding the scumbags that took away his loved ones. He has a knack for complex and colorful wordplay, but he mostly keeps this to his own internal monologues, communicating with the outside world with only the sparest language. Max eventually links the death of his family to the diabolical Aesir Corporation and an experimental drug called Valkyr, but that's only the beginning of his journey of revenge and redemption.
