Captain John Boyd is a soldier in the Mexican-American War that was suddenly struck with paralyzing fear in the middle of a particularly brutal battle. He played dead and ended up in a pile of dead bodies, though when the blood from the bodies poured into his mouth, Boyd was struck with a sudden vitality and managed to single-handedly kill several Mexican soldiers. He was rewarded for "bravery" and stationed at Fort Spencer, a remote outpost in the Sierra Nevada mountains, occupied by military misfits. There, he encounters a stranger that calls himself Colqhoun... and so begins a bizarre adventure of murder and cannibalism that ends with Boyd finding and embracing the brave man inside - but at a terrible price.
