Lt. Col. Gordon Tall was the officer in charge of the campaign to seize the island of Guadalcanal from the Japanese during World War II. A gruff, veteran soldier, Tall is haunted by the fact that he'll be ending his military career without having been promoted to General. He plays favorites with one of his Captains, John Gaff, and clashes with another, the compassionate James Staros, who serves as Tall's field officer. The campaign for the island takes a dramatic turn when Staros refuses to obey a direct order from Tall, claiming that taking a Japanese bunker by frontal assault would result in most of his men being killed. The bunker is eventually taken and Tall relieves Staros of his command for disobeying his order, which sends the Captain back home and leaves the Lt. Col. behind to continue fighting the war.
