Inspector Frederick Abberline of Scotland Yard was in charge of the Jack the Ripper case, investigating the gruesome murders of several London prostitutes at the hands of what Abberline believed to be a skilled surgeon. Abberline is assisted in his investigation by his trusty, Shakespeare-quoting partner, Sergeant Peter Godley - and by his clairvoyant abilities, making Abberline a true "visionary" as he's able to psychically gather clues (often with the help of opium and absinthe). Abberline becomes romantically involved with one of the targeted prostitutes, Mary Kelly, though he later denies himself happiness with her as he uncovers a conspiracy that goes all the way up to the Queen of England.
