Echo is a member of a secret and highly illegal group of operatives known as "Actives" (or "Dolls"), people whose memories and identities in the outside world have been erased so they can be imprinted with new personas for different "engagements" - crimes, fantasies, investigations, pretty much anything money can buy. However, each imprint has its unique set of glitches, and Echo is given glimpses of her pre-Dollhouse identity with each assignment - she was once a college activist named Caroline Farrell who attempted to expose an organization called the Rossum Corporation.
