David Levinson is a brilliant MIT graduate slumming it as a cable guy when he discovers hidden satellite transmissions that appear to be a "countdown clock" of an impending alien invasion. With the help of his ex-wife Constance Sparo, a senior White House staff member, David is able to gain access to the Oval Office and share his findings with President Thomas J. Whitmore. David ends up joining forces with U.S. Marine Captain Steven Hiller to shut down the aliens' defense systems, a tactical maneuver combining Hiller's talents as a hotshot pilot with David's technological expertise. The two succeed in shutting down the powerful force field that protects the alien ships, allowing every army on the planet to blow the spacemen to kingdom come.
