Dirty Details Done Dirt Cheap:
Carl Brashear was an uneducated man who left behind his life as a Kentucky sharecropper in 1948 to pursue his dream of becoming the first African American to be a Diver in the U.S. Navy. He is first assigned to the galley of the U.S.S. Hoist, then selected to attend a Diving and Salvaging school in Bayonne, New Jersey, where his chief instructor is the brooding Master Chief Petty Officer Leslie William Sunday, a man whom Brashear admires and who is under orders from the school's commanding officer to make sure Brashear fails. Brashear and Sunday initially clash, but Brashear's sheer determination and passion in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds eventually earns Sunday's admiration and respect. Brashear fights bureaucracy, racism and even the loss of his left leg in pursuit of his dream - with Sunday's help, he completes his training and achieves the rank of Master Diver.
