DC's emerald archer has gone through a lot of changes over the years, but the absolute tipping point for Green Arrow came in the 1987 miniseries The Longbow Hunters. When long-time girlfriend Black Canary is captured and tortured by a group of villains, Oliver Queen decides that it's time to drop the kooky boxing-glove arrows and other gadgets and go back to what archery does best: putting holes in people. The new gritty re-imagining of the character was a huge success after he found his edge.
