Chris Radtke: How is the Toy Drive going so far?

Sugar Slam: It’s going amazing. Amazing. It’s just really exciting. Every single day I go in there and open boxes and see what everybody’s giving, and it’s just really amazing.

Chris Radtke: That’s awesome.

Sugar Slam: I’ve cried. I seriously cried just feeling some of the generosity that was coming in. Its nuts. I didn’t think I would be so emotional to be honest.

Chris Radtke: Christmas miracle! What made you cry?

Sugar Slam: I’ve gotten a couple of letters saying we don’t have much but we think it’s a really great thing what you’re doing for charity and we’re giving what we can. And they’ll have a toy for a boy and girl and hats, gloves, and a scarf. I can feel the letter. I know it’s sincere. A lady sent in a box from some website and it had four sock monkeys in it and I freaked out. It was just so thoughtful. Every kid has just got to have a sock monkey.

Chris Radtke: They’ve come back too.

Sugar Slam: They’ve come back with a bang.

Chris Radtke: Who are you guys partnering with in terms of getting the toys out? Or are you standing on street corners?

Sugar Slam: Yeah pretty much. Everyday I go out with a sign and a box. We’re partnering with different charities in the Detroit Metro area. One of them is called the family tree, it’s like a family shelter organization that caters to different organizations be it like safe houses, underprivileged families that sign on. There’s another one called Matrix Organization and they have like 25 low income head starts around the city and they could really use these toys because the kids that go to these head starts have families as well. Let’s see...what was the other one? I think it was the House of Charity, they just had a pickup and the office and they deal with underprivileged street kids that have nowhere else to go and you would not believe the ages of these kids, some of them are really young kids. A lot of the places that I called they just wanted winter stuff, they are like “forget about the toys we just need winter stuff.” That just impressed me because I was like man there is so much more to this, so much more need that you don’t really latch on to until you do something like this. You don’t really realize. It’s sad, but I’m loving it.
