During the Enemy of the State storyline, Wolverine was brainwashed and used by The Hand and Hydra as a one man wrecking crew to kill super-powered people, so that The Hand, along with the Dawn of the White Light, could revive them as assassins. Mark Millar crafted a story that has more in line with his later Kick-Ass than anything we had seen at the time.   The shocking moment is when, against the X-Men, he murders Northstar, gets Elektra killed and all to serve the twisted needs of The Gorgon. Of course, Wolverine soon is brought back from the clutches of Hydra in order to get some revenge, but it was a wild run where we were shown just how prominent a character like Wolverine could be; this sparked the start for his role in nearly every title in the Marvel franchise.
