As Katniss thinks back to the wars between the districts and the capital, she briefly recalls the capital's attempt at genetic mutations. One of the results was a bird that could mimic speech. These were sent around to Rebel outposts like a living wiretap. After the war they were released into the wild and bred with Mockingbirds to create "Mockingjays." All they could do, however, was mimic sound perfectly. The capital's creatures still exist, including super-poisonous Homing Wasps that have a rather key moment during The Hunger Games that quickly wipes out some of Katniss' competition and causes her to have a bad acid trip. Did we mention the Wasps' stingers secrete a poison that also gives you hallucinations? No?
Well, they do.
