Five years before the events of The Hunger Games, a horrific mine explosion kills Mr. Everdeen, Katniss's father; the disaster takes a real toll on the family and forces Katniss to assume the role of the family's caretaker at a young age. The scene of the mine explosion is never explicit in the books and is explained in flashbacks or dialogue between characters.
We'd like to see this scene kick off the movie (literally with a bang), to show the seriousness of the situation and its toll on the Everdeens and the other affected families of District 12. It's the most important event in Katniss's young life and sets her on the path that leads to being a frontrunner in the 74th Hunger Games.
