Time zips around in Citizen Kane with the ferocity of a Doctor Who episode written by John Byrne. Wavy dissolves don't do the trick. There are verbal gags (like "Merry Christmas. . .and a Happy New Year" with two decades in the ellipsis) or the moment shown here.
The picture frame within the window frame shows the top drawer writers of Kane's rival paper. One dissolve later we'll see the photo come to life, but this time with Kane in it. After a flash, we realize this is a new photo and Kane has bought the competition.
