We haven't heard much from John Sayles lately, but for 25 years he was elevating independent cinema with gems in every genre. His Sci-Fi/Comedy/Social Commentary The Brother From Another Planet works as a fish out of water tale as well as a great character piece of an overly stereotyped community. It's also damned funny, and has something to do with pinball machines.
