Proposed Division I tennis format changes won’t be decided until a new governance body meets for the first time.
During its Feb. 10 teleconference, the Division I Championships/Sports Management Cabinet referred a proposal for format changes to the Division I Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships to the Competition Oversight Committee, part of the new Division I governance structure, for additional discussion and possible action.
The format change recommendations are designed to reduce the length of matches at the championships.
The proposal by the Division I Men’s and Women’s Tennis Committee consists of:
- No-ad scoring in singles and doubles (competitors can win by one point instead of two);
- Three doubles matches played, with each match consisting of one set played to six games, with a 12-point tiebreak at six-games-all, followed (after a five minute intermission) by six singles matches, each best-of three sets, with a 12-point tiebreak at six-games-all;
- No warm-up with opponents.
