00:00:02.760 --> 00:00:04.120
Growing Patterns.
00:00:04.960 --> 00:00:13.280
In this video, we will learn how to complete and fill the gaps in patterns involving numbers and shapes.
00:00:13.280 --> 00:00:19.680
We read patterns in just the same way as we read a sentence in a book, from left to right.
00:00:21.600 --> 00:00:30.880
To complete a pattern or find out what comes next in a pattern, first we have to work out what the rule of the pattern is.
00:00:32.280 --> 00:00:36.560
In other words, what happens to the number or the shape each time.
00:00:38.160 --> 00:00:44.760
We have to look closely at the pattern and work out what’s changing each time or what’s different.
00:00:46.200 --> 00:00:50.320
Once we know the rule of the pattern, we can use it to work out what comes next.
00:00:52.240 --> 00:00:54.800
The first step is to find the rule.
00:00:56.560 --> 00:00:59.160
Our pattern begins with one orange square.
00:01:00.400 --> 00:01:02.840
The next shape has two orange squares.
00:01:04.320 --> 00:01:10.320
What did we do to the first square to make it into a shape with two squares?
00:01:11.520 --> 00:01:15.400
We’ve added a square where the blue dot is marked.
00:01:16.840 --> 00:01:22.320
So the rule is to add a square to the top right-hand corner of the square.
00:01:24.360 --> 00:01:28.040
The next shape in the sequence is made from three squares.
00:01:29.920 --> 00:01:35.240
We’ve added a square to the top right-hand corner of the pattern that came before.
00:01:37.280 --> 00:01:40.920
And the rule continues to find the fourth shape in the pattern.
00:01:42.160 --> 00:01:44.280
The fourth shape has four squares.
00:01:45.440 --> 00:01:50.320
We added a square to the top right-hand corner of the pattern that came before.
00:01:52.280 --> 00:01:55.600
Once we found the rule, we can use it to continue the pattern.
00:01:56.720 --> 00:01:59.760
The final shape in this pattern has five squares.
00:02:00.760 --> 00:02:09.880
We added a square to the top right-hand corner of the square in the pattern before to give us the fifth shape in the sequence.
00:02:11.400 --> 00:02:15.160
So to complete a pattern, the first thing we do is find the rule.
00:02:15.840 --> 00:02:18.040
And then we can continue the pattern.
00:02:19.480 --> 00:02:23.800
Let’s try some examples of patterns which use shapes and numbers.
00:02:27.680 --> 00:02:28.720
Complete the pattern.
00:02:30.400 --> 00:02:32.240
First, we have to find the rule.
00:02:33.760 --> 00:02:36.160
The pattern begins with one pink square.
00:02:38.040 --> 00:02:42.920
Next, there are two pink squares, then three.
00:02:44.680 --> 00:02:46.680
What’s happening to the squares each time?
00:02:48.560 --> 00:02:51.200
One plus one makes two.
00:02:52.440 --> 00:02:54.600
Two plus one makes three.
00:02:56.160 --> 00:03:00.080
The rule of the pattern is to add one pink square each time.
00:03:01.360 --> 00:03:10.640
We also need to think about where to add the pink square, on top, at the bottom, to the left, to the right.
00:03:12.360 --> 00:03:16.480
We have to add one square here, to the right each time.
00:03:17.800 --> 00:03:22.480
So the rule of the pattern is to add one pink square to the right each time.
00:03:23.880 --> 00:03:27.520
So to complete the pattern, we need to add one square to the right.
00:03:28.760 --> 00:03:32.520
So we would complete the pattern using four pink squares.
00:03:36.600 --> 00:03:45.280
Complete the following pattern: 60, 50, 40, what, and what.
00:03:45.280 --> 00:03:47.240
First, we have to find the rule.
00:03:48.800 --> 00:03:50.840
What happens to the numbers each time?
00:03:51.520 --> 00:03:58.320
60, 50, 40, we’re counting back in 10s.
00:03:59.840 --> 00:04:03.000
That’s the same as saying take away 10.
00:04:04.520 --> 00:04:07.920
So we’ve found the rule; subtract 10 each time.
00:04:09.400 --> 00:04:12.400
60 take away 10 is 50.
00:04:13.960 --> 00:04:16.840
50 take away 10 is 40.
00:04:18.320 --> 00:04:22.680
40 take away 10 is 30.
00:04:23.960 --> 00:04:27.960
And 30 take away 10 is 20.
00:04:29.600 --> 00:04:34.000
The numbers we need to complete the pattern are 30 and 20.
00:04:34.760 --> 00:04:39.000
60, 50, 40, 30, 20.
00:04:40.320 --> 00:04:43.280
We found the rule, which was to take away 10 each time.
00:04:43.600 --> 00:04:45.920
And then we were able to complete the pattern.
00:04:47.480 --> 00:04:54.560
In this video, we’ve learned how to complete or fill the gaps in patterns with numbers and shapes.
