00:00:02.200 --> 00:00:05.870
In this video we’re gonna look at some finding the percentage change questions.
00:00:06.430 --> 00:00:09.270
We’ll talk about what we mean when we say a percentage change.
00:00:09.450 --> 00:00:12.370
And we’ll also discuss some of the common mistakes that you need to avoid.
00:00:14.120 --> 00:00:17.090
We use percentages as a way of representing proportions.
00:00:17.470 --> 00:00:20.320
They help us to make comparisons between different situations.
00:00:21.490 --> 00:00:35.820
For example, if we are looking for a new lawn mower and one brand claims that someone save ten minutes cutting their lawn with that mower, while another brand claims that someone save twenty minutes cutting their lawn with that mower, which one should we go for if we want to save time cutting our lawn?
00:00:37.010 --> 00:00:44.250
Well, it really depends how long the two people would normally spend cutting their lawns in the first place, assuming they both started with the same mower.
00:00:45.920 --> 00:00:51.000
In all these questions you need to ask yourself compared to what or from what?
00:00:52.540 --> 00:00:57.000
Let’s say that the two people were using identical lawn mowers before trying the new brands.
00:00:57.310 --> 00:01:03.440
And the first one normally took twenty minutes to cut their lawn, while the second one normally took fifty minutes to cut their lawn.
00:01:04.680 --> 00:01:12.560
So working at the percentage change for the first person, they got a decrease of ten minutes compared to an original time of twenty minutes.
00:01:13.680 --> 00:01:16.780
So as a proportion that means minus ten over twenty.
00:01:16.780 --> 00:01:18.160
So that’s minus a half.
00:01:18.160 --> 00:01:22.340
So they’re decreasing the time that they spend cutting the lawn by a half.
00:01:23.570 --> 00:01:27.660
And to convert that proportion into percentage, we need to multiply it by a hundred.
00:01:28.850 --> 00:01:30.970
And that gives us minus fifty percent.
00:01:32.170 --> 00:01:36.820
So the first person has decreased the amount of time they spend cutting the lawn by fifty percent.
00:01:38.270 --> 00:01:42.970
And for the second person they’ve saved twenty minutes compared to the original fifty minutes.
00:01:43.310 --> 00:01:46.220
So the proportion change is minus twenty over fifty.
00:01:47.640 --> 00:01:54.750
And when we times that by a hundred to convert the proportion to a percentage, that turns out to be a decrease of forty percent.
00:01:55.910 --> 00:02:07.870
So although the second person save twenty minutes cutting their lawn compared to only ten minutes that the first person saved, that was a smaller proportion of the overall time that they spent cutting the lawn than the original person.
00:02:09.080 --> 00:02:13.380
So that means that brand A saves a larger proportion of time when cutting the lawn.
00:02:14.310 --> 00:02:23.940
And if person B had been using brand A’s new mower, they would have saved fifty percent of their time when cutting their lawn, which means that they’d save twenty-five minutes instead of twenty minutes.
00:02:25.980 --> 00:02:28.640
Right then, let’s do some percentage change questions.
00:02:29.990 --> 00:02:33.820
A train ticket costs thirty-nine dollars if you buy it on the day that you travel.
00:02:34.270 --> 00:02:37.430
If you buy it before that day, then it’ll only cost thirty dollars.
00:02:37.810 --> 00:02:41.090
Find the percentage discount for buying early to the nearest percent.
00:02:42.380 --> 00:02:45.910
So we’re looking for the percentage discount for buying early.
00:02:47.420 --> 00:02:49.750
So the original price is thirty-nine dollars.
00:02:49.780 --> 00:02:52.760
And if we get the discount price, we’re only paying thirty dollars.
00:02:53.690 --> 00:02:58.280
So I’m going from thirty-nine dollars down to thirty dollars, that’s a saving of nine dollars.
00:02:59.350 --> 00:03:05.040
So the proportion of the full price that we saved is minus nine over thirty-nine.
00:03:06.300 --> 00:03:10.490
And if we want to scale that proportion up to a percentage, we need to multiply by a hundred.
00:03:11.280 --> 00:03:17.130
And when we tap that into our calculator, we get minus twenty-three point O seven six nine two three and so on and so on and so on.
00:03:17.460 --> 00:03:21.770
So to the nearest whole percentage, that’s twenty-three percent saving.
00:03:23.130 --> 00:03:26.160
Now the fact that it’s a negative number means that the cost reduced.
00:03:26.160 --> 00:03:27.760
It means we got a saving or a discount.
00:03:28.120 --> 00:03:32.410
So my answer is we had a twenty-three percent discount to the nearest one percent.
00:03:34.960 --> 00:03:44.000
Now we gotta find the percentage change from four-hundred and ninety-three to three-hundred and eighty-six to the nearest one percent and state whether it’s an increase or a decrease.
00:03:45.530 --> 00:03:49.370
Well we’re going from four-hundred and ninety-three to three-hundred and eighty-six.
00:03:50.190 --> 00:03:53.110
And that is a drop of one hundred and seven.
00:03:54.920 --> 00:04:01.930
So to work out the proportion of the change, well minus one hundred and seven is the change, we started off at four-hundred and ninety-three.
00:04:01.930 --> 00:04:05.320
So we’re looking at minus one hundred and seven over four-hundred and ninety-three.
00:04:06.910 --> 00:04:11.080
And to convert that proportion into a percentage, we just multiply by a hundred.
00:04:12.450 --> 00:04:18.770
And when we put that into our calculator, we get negative twenty-one point seven O three eight five and then lots of other digits.
00:04:19.780 --> 00:04:24.130
So ignoring everything after the decimal place, we see that would be minus twenty-one percent.
00:04:24.590 --> 00:04:27.780
But a sneaky peek at the first decimal place tells us it’s a seven.
00:04:28.090 --> 00:04:32.440
Now a seven is five or above, so that twenty-one is going to have to round up to a twenty-two.
00:04:33.790 --> 00:04:36.200
So to the nearest one percent, it’s twenty-two percent.
00:04:36.200 --> 00:04:40.980
And the fact that it was negative means that the-the number went down — means it’s a decrease.
00:04:41.130 --> 00:04:43.150
So the answer is twenty-two percent decrease.
00:04:47.920 --> 00:04:49.970
Fred paid fifty dollars for a new jumper.
00:04:50.450 --> 00:04:55.880
He then found that his friend Ted had bought exactly the same type of jumper, but he paid sixty-five dollars for it.
00:04:56.160 --> 00:05:01.670
Ted said he paid thirty percent more than Fred, but Fred said he paid only twenty-three percent less than Ted.
00:05:02.060 --> 00:05:02.930
Who was right?
00:05:04.480 --> 00:05:08.010
First let’s look at how much more Ted paid than Fred paid.
00:05:08.310 --> 00:05:11.200
So Fred paid fifty dollars; Ted paid sixty-five dollars.
00:05:12.330 --> 00:05:15.900
That means compared to Fred, Ted paid fifteen dollars more.
00:05:17.070 --> 00:05:21.100
So when Ted is comparing himself to Fred, the starting point is fifty dollars.
00:05:21.100 --> 00:05:23.990
So we paid fifteen dollars more than fifty dollars.
00:05:25.590 --> 00:05:29.360
And to convert that proportion to a percentage, we need to multiply by a hundred.
00:05:30.600 --> 00:05:33.340
So that’s an increase of thirty percent.
00:05:35.070 --> 00:05:37.650
And Ted said that he paid thirty percent more than Fred.
00:05:37.960 --> 00:05:39.330
Yeah well that is correct.
00:05:40.690 --> 00:05:49.080
But when Fred said that he paid twenty-three percent less than Ted, he was comparing himself with a starting point of Ted’s price, which was sixty-five dollars.
00:05:50.350 --> 00:05:53.020
So the difference in price is still fifteen dollars.
00:05:53.180 --> 00:05:55.360
Fred paid fifteen dollars less than Ted.
00:05:56.630 --> 00:06:05.020
But when we’re working out the proportion, that fifteen dollars is being compared to the sixty-five dollars starting point of what Ted paid for the jumper.
00:06:06.080 --> 00:06:09.460
And again we multiply it by a hundred to convert that to a percentage.
00:06:10.520 --> 00:06:15.560
And that is minus twenty-three point O seven six nine two three and then lots of other digits percent.
00:06:17.560 --> 00:06:23.090
Well to the nearest one percent, Fred did in fact pay twenty-three percent less than Ted.
00:06:24.500 --> 00:06:26.380
So it looks like he was right too.
00:06:27.610 --> 00:06:32.190
So to answer the question “who was right?” they were both right.
00:06:35.410 --> 00:06:44.800
In this question, according to the United Nations estimates the world’s population was as shown in the table below in nineteen hundred, nineteen fifty, and the year two thousand.
00:06:45.480 --> 00:06:52.440
We need to calculate the percentage increases between nineteen hundred and nineteen fifty and between nineteen fifty and two thousand.
00:06:52.750 --> 00:06:54.990
And we need to get our answers to one decimal place.
00:06:55.450 --> 00:07:04.440
So the figures we’ve got: in nineteen hundred, it was one point six five billion, in nineteen fifty, it was two point five two billion, and by two thousand, it was six point O six billion.
00:07:05.930 --> 00:07:13.010
Well we’re gonna do two different calculations then: going from nineteen hundred to nineteen fifty and then from nineteen fifty to two thousand.
00:07:14.400 --> 00:07:22.560
Well between nineteen hundred and nineteen fifty, the population went from one point six five billion up to two point five two billion, which was an increase of nought point eight seven billion.
00:07:22.890 --> 00:07:30.010
And between nineteen fifty and two thousand, it went from two point five two billion to six point O six billion, which is an increase of three point five four billion.
00:07:31.110 --> 00:07:36.670
And for the first calculation, the increase was positive nought point eight seven billion.
00:07:37.020 --> 00:07:40.220
Now that was compared to the starting point of one point six five billion.
00:07:40.220 --> 00:07:41.420
So that’s the proportion.
00:07:42.570 --> 00:07:45.360
And to convert it into a percentage, we’re gonna multiply by a hundred.
00:07:46.250 --> 00:07:51.390
And that gives us an increase of positive fifty-two point seven two seven two lots of other digits percent.
00:07:53.280 --> 00:08:02.010
Then between nineteen fifty and two thousand, the increase was three point five four billion, but that was compared to a starting point of two point five two billion.
00:08:04.070 --> 00:08:13.970
Then multiplying by a hundred to convert that to a percentage, we get positive a hundred and forty point four seven six one nine zero then lots of other digits percent.
00:08:15.850 --> 00:08:19.910
Well looking back at the question, we’ve got to give our answers correct to one decimal place.
00:08:21.490 --> 00:08:28.140
And looking at the first answer there, fifty-two point seven two, so fifty-two point seven to one decimal place.
00:08:28.140 --> 00:08:30.700
The next digit is a two, so we don’t have to round that up.
00:08:32.180 --> 00:08:36.410
And in the second case there between nineteen fifty and two thousand, a hundred and forty point four.
00:08:36.680 --> 00:08:40.430
But the next digit is a seven, so that four is gonna have to round up to a five.
00:08:41.710 --> 00:08:51.690
So there’re our answers: nineteen hundred to nineteen fifty was an increase of fifty-two point seven percent and from nineteen fifty to two thousand, that’s an increase of a hundred and forty point five percent.
00:08:52.980 --> 00:08:59.140
Now a little bit of interpretation on that, between nineteen hundred and nineteen fifty the population went up by just over fifty percent.
00:08:59.550 --> 00:09:06.040
So half as many people who were living in nineteen hundred again were added to the population by nineteen fifty.
00:09:06.500 --> 00:09:11.690
But between nineteen fifty and two thousand, the- the population increased by more than a hundred percent.
00:09:11.690 --> 00:09:18.070
So the population in that fifty years more than doubled; in fact it went up by nearly one and a half times in that time.
00:09:20.170 --> 00:09:31.210
Now we saw in our first example that having a bigger number here — a bigger raw increase or decrease — didn’t necessarily mean that there was a bigger proportional change you have to compare it to the starting point.
00:09:32.060 --> 00:09:39.860
So in the lawn mower case even though we had a bigger saving of twenty minutes, that was a smaller proportion of the starting point.
00:09:40.190 --> 00:09:47.500
In this case a bigger increase of three point five four billion was more, even compared to the starting point here.
00:09:47.500 --> 00:09:50.720
It was a hundred and forty percent rather than only fifty-two point seven percent.
00:09:52.180 --> 00:09:58.970
So you do have to complete your percentage calculations to get the full picture and make a better comparison between those two sets of figures.
