When the fountain was built in the 1960s, it was recognized as the world's largest musical fountain. It offers an impressive combination of music, water, and lights that creates a breathtaking display. Measuring 250 feet in length and over 100 feet in width, the Grand Haven Musical Fountain remains one of the world's largest musical and light fountains. It has a rectangular basin that can hold up to 40,000 gallons of water while the 1,300 nozzles that are found in the basin range from 3/16 inch to 1 inch in diameter. These nozzles are responsible for spraying water in colorful moving patterns.

Volunteers who built the Grand Haven Musical Fountain in 1962 believed that the great city of Grand Haven needed a monument and a focal point. The construction of the fountain was meant to revitalize the Grand Haven area including its waterfront. The project reached a total cost of just under $250,000.

During the whole summer, the fountain shows would display various themes and styles which never fail to inspire and delight its spectators. The accompanying music ranges from classical to rock and roll and has attracted an eclectic mixture of visitors. Furthermore, the Grand Haven Musical Fountain features a specialized and a crowd favorite Fourth of July show which comes with spectacular fireworks display.

The Grand Haven Musical Fountain is only open in the summer and is close during winter because of the latter's subzero temperatures. Between the months of May and September, fountain shows are run every weeknight and weekends. The show starts at dusk and runs for around 25 minutes. Within this period, the show displays up to 3,000 changes in water movement and light.

The operation of the Grand Haven Musical Fountain is exclusively controlled by a computer software. Each minute of the fountain show takes a one-hour period of programming.

Indeed, visiting Michigan during summer is such a wonderful treat with lots of activities to enjoy. Of course, these include the unforgettable sights, sounds and lights of the Grand Haven Musical Fountain.
