MTG decks ten years ago
Well, 10 years ago I was an avid mtg player, really willing to earn a ticket to the pro tour to play with the best of the best around the world. But after some time, I realized that I was not one of the chosen, my skills in magic where on the average, and my real power was in a different place: developing sites!
I was using deckcheck until some day, out of the blue, the site went down, letting me and the magic community without one of the biggest sources of information to build your decks and play the best of the metagame in you shop. I talked to a friend and he give me the feedback I needed: I should buy a replacement site for it.
Mtgdecks.net was the first site I developed in my free time, it was also one of my first attempts to get the most out of cakephp, a MVC framework aimed at making building awesome site easier. I started gathering the decks from all the online site, and I also managed to scrape many of the decks from deckcheck using google cache. At the beginning the site was small, but ready to take the place deckcheck left.
Over the years I learned many things and started to try to make it profitable running ads, until I found that what I was doing was "monetization" and that, with the help of SEO, I can take the site even further, in fact I was doing many things in the wrong way, and as soon as I fixed the, the site started to rank among the best magic the gathering sites around the world, and users loved it.
After that, the site has became a staple, and many people go to it to fint the right decks for their tournaments, it doesnt matter if you play paper, mtgo o mtg arena, on mtgdecks.net you will find the right deck for you.
And this is the end of my small attempt to use AWS buckets to publish a site.
Best, Angel.
