Jarmo Lampelan koskettavassa draamaelokuvassa Juha Kukkosen esittämä isä yrittää selvittää, millainen hänen poikansa oli.

Werther kertoo isästä ja pojasta, jotka eivät tunne toisiaan, mutta olisivat halunneet tuntea. Isä, kuvanveistäjä Viitanen ei ole nähnyt poikaansa Eeroa 15 vuoteen. Pojan olemassaolo konkretisoituu Viitaselle vasta nyt, kun hän saa kirjeitse tiedon Eeron kuolemasta.

Viitasta kiinnostaa millainen Eero oli ja hän päättää mennä tapaamaan ex-vaimoaan. Tapaamisesta alkaa Viitasen salapoliisityö. Hän tapaa Eeron tunteneita ihmisiä ja yrittää muodostaa kuvan millainen tästä oli kasvanut. Yllätyksekseen hän saa tietää, että Eero oli muuttanut Suomenlinnaan, Viitasen kotisaarelle, aikomuksenaan tulla tapaamaan isäänsä.
