The movie is based on the first book that Andrew Morton wrote about Princess Diana. The movie did an excellent job of following the format of the book. Diana: Her True Story tells the story of how Lady Diana Spencer grew up, what her life was like before she met Prince Charles, and after she married the prince.
Lady Diana Spencer was the typical young girl who worked and loved to party with her friends. However, her life changed when Prince Charles showed romantic interest in her. It didn't take the press long to start following her. It grated on Diana's nerves even then. Once her and Prince Charles got engaged, she thought that the constant hounding of the press would stop, but it didn't. Plus, the stress and the strain of the upcoming wedding didn't help her nerves either. After the royal wedding, Princess Diana didn't get the fairy tale ending she dreamed of. Matter of fact, she got her prince in name only because it became painfully obvious early on that Prince Charles still had feelings for Camilla Parker Bowles. Any woman would be devastated to find out that her new husband was really in love with another woman. Princess Diana didn't receive support from her new in-laws, which drove her into a massive depression.
There was no mention of Diana's extra marital affairs, but there were hints in a few scenes. Producers spared no expense on wardrobe and sets. The movie even reenacted the carriage ride that Diana and her father took to St. Paul's Cathedral.
The actors did a great job of portraying the emotion of the royal family at each interval. Some critics booed Serena Scott Thomas's performance, but other's praised her range of emotion. Thomas did a good job of expressing mood swings, which is a symptom of anorexia. It was obvious that David Threlfall studied the mannerisms of Prince Charles. It was apparent that all the actors (even the one's with small roles) took their parts seriously.
Diana: Her True Story is an excellent beginners' learning tool for people who wish to study the royal family. Princess Diana already had the people's heart, but the movie makes the people's hearts bleed for the Princess. Diana: Her True Story can be purchased on DVD from Amazon.
