Davidson County, TN currently allows dogs to be Chained 24/7 in any type of weather as long as:
1) The chain/tether is at least 15 Ft in Length
2) The dog has Shelter
3) The dog has adequate Food/Water
Dogs are Naturally Social Beings who Thrive on Social Interaction
with Humans and Other Animals. Dogs chained for years on end
suffer immense psychological damage. An otherwise friendly and docile dog, when kept continuously chained, becomes neurotic, unhappy, anxious, and often aggressive.
A Chained Dog is 4 Times More Likely to Bite because they have No Escape when they Feel Threatened. On Average, 35 Children a YEAR are Killed or Seriously Injured by a Chained Dog in the Untied States.
Chained dogs are left out in extreme weather and forced to suffer with no relief through blazing hot summers and the miserable freeze of winter. Most of these forgotten back yard dogs never see a vet in their lifetime and suffer skin infections from parasites and have worms eating at them from the inside out. The vast majority of dogs chained up outside are not altered (spayed/neutered) and they have litter after litter of unwanted puppies. These unwanted puppies are then dropped off at Animal Control. Because of pet overpopulation, Animal Control is already overflowing with unwanted pets and many of these dogs are euthanized simply for lack of space. The tax payers of Davidson County are paying for the housing and then euthanasia of the thousands of unwanted puppies born to dogs living on chains every single year.
The citizens of Davidson County would like to see a much stronger Tethering Ordinance put in place to protect our children, to protect our pets and to protect the image of Music City.
Davidson County needs to join the dozens and dozens of counties around this country that have strict Anti-Tethering Ordinances in Place.
