BANGALORE: A retired bank employee was stabbed to death and his wife was wounded in Bangalore when unidentified assailants entered their home on the pretext of buying a gold necklace and attacked them on Tuesday.

Hearing a commotion in Uday Raj Singh (61) and Susheela's residence, passersby alerted two police constables nearby. They summoned three more constables and rushed to the house.

Seeing the cops, assailants scaled the compound wall with the jewel box they had stolen. After a chase of nearly 200 m, the constables and public nabbed three gang members while three others escaped. In the melee, the assailants threw the jewel box on the road and it was recovered by police. Susheela was shifted to hospital and her condition is stable, police said. Uday was a retired State Bank of Mysore employee and Susheela a homemaker.

The gang got in touch with the couple after learning that they wished to sell an antique diamond-studded gold necklace, and it wasn't their first visit to the house.

Harendra Singh, Uday's cousin, "I'm shocked and don't see any rivalry behind the killing as Uday had no enemies at all,".

They heard about it when Susheela called Uday's elder sister Uma Devi around 3.20pm. Uma Devi then rushed to the hospital.

"We've sent the necklace to the archaeological department, asking for its value. We've detained three assailants and a search is on for the others," said Kamal Pant, additional commissioner of police (law and order).
