This video, co-produced by the Community-based Research Laboratory (CBRL) at the University of Victoria and EKOS Communications, is part of a larger project focusing on the livelihoods of informal and organized recyclers -called Catadores- in Brazil. Beyond Gramacho reveals the socio-economic and environmental conditions, struggles and opportunities that are present in informal resource recovery. Over 1800 Catadores work day and night at the landfill and neighboring recycling cooperatives, recovering recyclable materials from the waste stream. Almost at its capacity, Gramacho receives about 7,000 metric tons of waste every day, not only from Rio de Janeiro and Duque de Caxias but also from the neighboring municipalities.
This video takes you through the residential area, a squatter settlement beside the landfill, where many of the Catadores and their families live. The visit painted a sad reality of the extreme poverty and exclusion this community faces. As meager as this work is, it is for many the only life they have known, and the proposed closure of the landfill poses a major threat to their livelihoods. The video illustrates the growing national social movement of Catadores, the Movimento Nacional dos Catadores, and showcases some successful experiences from the Greater Metropolitan Region of São Paulo. In Diadema for example, the municipality recognizes the service the recyclers are providing and are paid for the amount of material collected and redirected into the recycling stream. Its a win-win solution, where the local government can reduce waste management costs. However, there are still many hurdles to achieve true environmental and social justice, and where the environmental service the recyclers are doing is remunerated. In addition, the effects of the current economic crisis underline how crucial government support and the creation of public-private partnerships for organized selective collection is to improve the livelihoods of these people.
The aim of this video is to raise awareness about the livelihoods of the Catadores, and the important work they are doing to recover resources, despite extreme poverty and disempowerment. Informal recycling is not only a reality in poor countries in the Global South, we also find impoverished individuals making a living through collecting and selling recyclable materials in rich countries. The documentary does not only contest grim picture of misery on the landfill, but provides concrete examples for how to transform the lives of these Catadores into citizens.
