A story of step brother-sister whose mother died a cinematographic reflection during one day in the eve of the Christmas is an image of our society that nobody will be left indifferent.

Alena and Nikita are step brother-sister whose mother died. As they dont want to stay in separate orphanages they decide to run away and set out in search of their fathers. They met the cruel world of adults where people can cheat orphans, they could just buy them or throw them to the streets. The feeling of hunger brought them to the supermarket. Here melodrama is transforming into the fars: Gilded youth is just imitating the thieves-kleptomaniacs and we can see it from point of view of Alenas starving eyes Film is made in genre of a Christmas fairy-tale but just adapted to todays reality. Hunger, cold, orphanhood, poverty, riches are simple, distinct things, openly and comprehensible telling about the essence of life

It is a very simple sentimental storysad and tragic at the end. As if a fairytale, but not Christmas story or Christmas fairytale this genre is not violated here but just has been adapted to todays reality. Interlacing between tenderness and sorrow could be called melodramatic. But like in every quality melodrama, social basic permeates this kernel thoroughly by tangles of categorical imperatives.
Hunger, coldness, orphanage, poverty, wealth all these clear and distinct things, openly and seriously telling about their essence. The story is told with great tenderness yet it exemplifies the unflinching eye of its award-winning director Kira Muratova whose demanding films examine contemporary social issues with a wild imagination and magical cinematography.

Filmed on location in Ukraine, Melody for a Street Organ has been received with great critical acclaim. At the Moscow International Film Festival it was awarded both the FIPRESCI and the International Federation of Film Clubs Jury prize for best film and Lena Kostyuk received the award for best female performance for her role as Alyona.

The film also features a brilliant Russian cast, including the two great actors: Oleg Tabakov who appeared in Sergei Bondarchuks War and Peace (1968) and Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears (1980) and Renata Litvinova who starred in Muratovas Passions (1994).
