The tiny nation of Iceland, best known for glaciers, cod, volcanoes and eclectic music, was the launchpad for Wikieaks most notorious release. Meet Birgitta Jónsdóttir, former collaborator with Julian Assange, poet, writer, artist, internet pioneer and Buddhist. Three years ago, Jónsdóttir was a temporarily unemployed independent parent of three; now she's a member of Iceland's Parliament.
When Iceland's economy crashed in 2008, Jónsdóttir courageously stood up against the 'banksters' who caused the dramatic economic collapse, and became a political leader. Her principles of transparency, truth, and open information appealed to the Icelandic people, and once in office, Jónsdóttir hosted WikiLeaks in Iceland. After producing WikiLeaks' "Collateral Murder" video in April 2010, for a time she became WikiLeaks' spokesperson. No longer a member, she is now fighting a U.S. government subpoena for her electronic files related to WikiLeaks.
In this context of passion for openness and transparency, Jónsdóttir is the driving force behind the Icelandic Modern Media Initiative (IMMI), creating a unique free zone for whistleblowers, muck-racking journalists who fear retribution, writers, artists and anyone worldwide concerned with personal privacy and civil liberty. Last summer IMMI passed the Icelandic Parliament "in principle."
Our film follows the fight to make IMMI the law of the land and the journey of the first "IMMIgrants" relocating servers to Iceland for political protection. These include Mexican immigrant farmworkers in the U.S., afraid of deportation, and "9.11 Truthers" who propose to relocate their servers to Iceland, to defend their freedom of speech.
Iceland's new paradigm is emerging as one model for a world with no borders in the global information age. Decreasing government secrecy and increasing personal privacy online is the goal, highlighting the role of media in government and the people's "right to know."
Jónsdóttir is a charismatic leader, sporting Nancy Sinatra boots and blue nail polish, which sets off her sparkling blue eyes. As she travels the world to tell the story of IMMI, she brings the sensitivity of a poet, artist, and mother, from the world's most feminist nation. Her dedication to artistic and cultural preservation comes naturally; her mother, Iceland's most famous singer of the '60s revived ancient Icelandic story traditions.
Using the dramatic landscape of Iceland and Jónsdóttir's lively animation to visually frame this story, the complex soundscape is infused with her poetry and prose, ancient Icelandic Sagas, Birgitta's mother's music and contemporary music of Iceland. This is a story of courage and resistance, secrets and lies, whistleblowers and talking truth to power...and of a mouse that roared.
