Every year, thousands of children and their aspirational parents flock to Hollywood, dreaming of stardom. This documentary follows a handful of them as they pursue their dream.
Hollywood's pilot season, a traditional three-month casting window for new television shows, sees many young hopefuls and their families staying at the Oakwood, a temporary housing complex that has been catering for showbiz kids and their families for more than 20 years. Competition is intense as each child does their best to rise above the crowd to get noticed. Yet for a small handful of resilient kids, stardom awaits. Among the luminaries who got their big break when staying at the Oakwood are Hilary Duff, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Kirsten Dunst. The film also includes one year- later follow-up visits with the families featured, some of whom are achieving real success. Seven-year-old Savannah, for instance, landed a starring role in a forthcoming network television movie. After a string of television appearances, twelve-year-old Joey and his family are now preparing to relocate from Ohio to Hollywood. Yet for the vast majority of wannabes, their quest ends in failure.
Sometimes hilarious and sometimes heartbreaking, this film illuminates the world of child acting and shows the determination -- and the delusions -- behind the dream.
