A fan video of the A&E television production based on R.D. Blackmore's classic 19th century novel. Set during the Monmouth rebellion years, young John Ridd watches in horror as his father is killed by members of the notorious Doone clan, a once aristocratic family turned outlaw. He also is saved from drowning by a little girl named Lorna, whom he later discovers as they meet again as nearly adults (played by Richard Coyle and Amelia Warner) that she is a Doone, betrothed to her evil cousin, Carver (Aidan Gillen), who is named the successor of the family when old Sir Ensor Doone, the man Lorna believes to be her grandfather, dies. Carver is as determined as ever to make Lorna his own, despite her obvious dislike and disgust she shows toward him. John and Lorna fall in love, but his family is opposed to this as much as hers is. This leads to rivalry and battles between the two men and their kin as the political and social events at the time also mark the situation. Lorna is later discovered to have been kidnapped by the Doones so that Ensor's heir could get back the land that Lorna's real mother, the Countess Of Dugal, was to have inherited, but she, along with Lorna's brother, were killed and Lorna's marriage to Carver would have insured the property back to the Doones. With this knowledge, the newly discovered Lady Lorna Dugal was made a ward of the court and she must live with the royal family until she comes into her inheritance. Poor John feels he can never be good enough to marry Lorna and feels that the only way he can prove himself worthy of her is to capture and kill the Doones. When he succeeds (although Carver alone escapes), he is knighted and he and his beloved are free to marry, but not if Carver has anything to say about it! It's a great story and a very romantic and authentic feeling movie. The cast is great, especially the three leads. I really love Aidan Gillen, I have such a thing for bad guys (I'm sick, I know), and I knew he couldn't win, but he was so compelling there were times I wish he could. But the love of Lorna and John was very beautiful and watchable. And what great locations and costumes! I recommend viewing it, even if you're not into period drama (as I am), there's enough action to satisfy the guys, some great humor and intrigue as well as a love story. Music by Mychael and Jeff Danna. Enjoy!
