PART 1:
Dean and Sam were born into an apocalyptic world, where Lucifer walks the Earth and Croatoan virus spreads among normal people. Angels are losing the war on Earth and although at the beginning they were reluctant to join the human forces in an atempt to cooperate and stop Lucifer, as the time progressed the angels realized the humans have a lot to offer in the battles held on Earth and the two parties started working on collective strategies.
From the 50's human soldiers trained in killing demons called simply „Hunters" were being paired with angel soldiers to create effective units. The angels needed human vessels to walk the Earth, but since the human kind was on the verge of extinction (Croatoan virus, Lucifer causing disasters,...), it was decided the chosen angels won't ‚steal' living vessels and instead will rip out their grace to be born on Earth as human children to barren mothers, who wished to conceive. After they're born, the grace is returned to them and a part of it is given to a human child paired with the angel in order to establish a strong physical and emotional bond (mental communication, mutual trust, faster reflexes, protection...). At the same time these angels are forbidden to express emotion and love, as their loyalty and purpose is only to serve Heaven and the Lord.
For all the advantages this arrangement provides, the side effect of the soul piece transfer causes the human vessels of angels to grow old together with their human ‚counterparts'.
The names of the humans and their angels chosen to be trained this way are decided by the prophet of the Lord. Dean is one of those children, Sammy on the other hand was supposed to have a normal life, well, as normal as a life in an apocalyptic world could be. Everything changed when a demon broke into their parents' house the day Sammy turned one. Four years old Dean witnessed his mom's horrible death and Sammy was infected with Croatoan virus. He and Sammy barely escaped the fire that consumed the whole building just minutes after.

Castiel didn't know what exactly was happening, but he knew it was very bad. He haven't met his soul mate yet, but since the soul piece had been transferred to his human, he has never felt such strong emotions. So much fear, grief and sorrow. Then came the shock and he started shaking uncontrolably, as a single tear escaped his eye. He insisted to see his human immediately and wouldn't stop until his human mother found the name and the adress of the family and drove him over to them, even though it was against the protocol.
He recognized him instantaneously.
Without anyone to stop him, he sat down next to Dean on the ground and waited. Nobody paid him attention, probably thinking he's one of the sons. Dean's father was cradling his younger son in his arms, watching the fire-fighters put out the last of flames. Dean didn't seem to notice Castiel's arrival. Sirens and people's cries deafening. Castiel still felt the echo of Dean's emotions, but he realized he felt better the moment he came close to him. Instead, the feeling was replaced by such strong and powerful need to protect the boy, it was overwhelming.
A policeman started to walk their way and Castiel felt the reluctance radiating from Dean. Dean didn't want to talk to the man. Castiel raised his hand and said simple ‚no', watching the man change his direction.
„Who are you?" asked small voice next to him.
„I am Castiel." The angel answered and felt the other boy's eyes watching him. After a moment of silence, Castiel continued.
„I'm the one to protect you."
PART 2 (shortened)
The Croatoan virus infection is a slow process, angels just like humans are working on finding a cure, but till now unsuccessfully. Sammy is moved to a medical centre in Detroit and quarantined/observed. Meanwhile Dean with Castiel are put into training.
