In 1944, in Polonia ocupata de nazisti, Iacob, proprietarul unei cafenele de mult inchise dintr-un ghetou evreiesc, aude din intamplare un buletin de stiri la un post de radio interzis. Adus in biroul comandantului german pentru o presupusa incalcare a interdictiei de a circula noaptea, Iacob aude o stire despre victoriile fortelor sovietice asupra germanilor, intr-un oras aflat nu foarte departe de ghetou. Desi plin de bucurie, el nu poate impartasi vestea compatriotilor sai pentru a nu fi banuit de colaborationism. Totusi, nu trece mult pana cand trebuie sa-si asume acest risc. Pentru a-l impiedica pe unul dintre tinerii sai colegi, Mischa, sa evadeze, el ii da vestea incurajatoare, pretinzand ca a auzit-o la un radio pe care l-a tinut ascuns. Cu noi sperante intr-o viata mai buna, Mischa ii cere mana iubitei sale, Rosa, dar cum parintii acesteia se opun acestei casatorii in conditiile de acolo, le aduce ca argument vestea primita de la Iacob. Si de aici zvonul se imprasie si ajunge si la ureche calailor nazisti...
