Do braces hurt being put on?

I had braces put on about a year ago. Basically, you just sit down and he starts by applying some goop to little brackets which he glues to each of your teeth. It takes a while, maybe about 15 minutes. Then he bonds them by using a wand that he puts on the back of your teeth for about 5 seconds each. After that, they'll slip in the wires, and then you'll get to choose what color of ties you want! (So much fun! lol) And then you are pretty much finished! It doesn't hurt much the first few hours but as the time goes on, it gets worse. I'll be honest but the first night or the next morning it's pretty brutal!! It really it's pretty painful, I didn't take any Tylenol but you definitely can every few hours if you want. Also, eat lots of soft stuff like jello, ice cream, pudding, and shakes the first few days because it's practically impossible to do. About a month later you'll have to go back and he'll put on heavier wires which will probably hurt some but not as much. Eventually, it'll get to the point where getting them adjusted doesn't bother you at all. I hope this helped! And whatever you go through, just remember I know how you feel! Take care! :)

What foods can I not eat with braces?

Your orthodontist should have a list but biting into crunchy foods is a no-no. Cut your food like raw apples and carrots into small pieces—never bite into them. Same with chips especially really crunchy tortilla chips. No chewing gum. No sour candies. No sticky candies like caramel or gummies. Those will stay around your brackets longer and anything that is a carbohydrate and sticks to your teeth for a long time increases your chance for decay. Sodas are not a good choice either due to the acidity and the sugar. Even diet drinks have a code so busy to avoid them and drink them only with a meal occasionally. Never sip on them for long periods of time.

Do you know the biggest mistake made when looking to find out more about braces quotes Middletown KY or affordable braces Middletown KY?

One of the biggest mistakes people make is looking for an orthodontist expert and then waiting too long to actually get braces....

You want to get my teeth straight with as little stress as possible and within my budget..

Here are some of the top Middletown Orthodontics tips that will Help You...

People who have had braces, what are some good tips you’ve learned while wearing them?

Don't eat corn on the cob, no gum, caramel, sticky candy, etc.

Be patient. They are temporary but worth it. Yes it’s a pain and yes it’ll sometimes feel like you give up and want them off but in the end, you’ll love your smile.

So far, wax is my best friend for a few days after an adjustment. Otherwise, I hate them but the outcome keeps me semi-positive

Always take as much wax as your dentist will give you because you DO NOT want to run out. Nothing is worse than an ulcer irritated by a spiky part of your braces and no wax to cover it. Also, use Bonjela to help your mouth heal when you do get an ulcer. what the Doctor says and wear your retainer. Wear your retainer when you've got the braces off. If you don't, you could jeopardize your perfectly straight teeth and ruin all that work! So wear the retainer at night ALWAYS! Most people who don't wear their retainer their teeth will move back over time. You wouldn't want to have to get braces again 15 years later???

Buy proxy brushes. Those things will make your life SO much easier when it comes to keeping your teeth clean.

Do your best to keep them clean. No point having straight teeth that are decaying because you didn't spend the time cleaning out behind those wires properly. Also, carry toothpicks whenever you go out. That's usually smart.

Don't smoke. I had to get my teeth whitened after I got mine off because I smoked so much.

Brush your teeth with those small brushes they give you, you won't realize it until they come off but that plaque and stuff will really add up on your teeth and make it look ugly when they come off.

An electric toothbrush to be extra helpful.

Wear the rubber bands - if your orthodontist tells you to. Follow all their will regret it if you don't.

Take about 400 mg (adults) of ibuprofen right before your adjustment. It cuts down on the pain and inflammation you experience after your braces are tightened.

Don't forget to floss while you have braces. It's very important.

Wear your rubber bands ... You will extend the time you have to wear braces. Sometimes for another 6-12 months (or longer). Eat sugar-free foods. If you don't, the sugar will go underneath the bracket and rot your teeth and leave marks on afterward from where the bracket was.. my orthodontist showed me pics and it was gross. Keep your teeth clean. WEAR YOUR RETAINER EVERY NIGHT! Your teeth move the most at night, especially while sleeping. if you don’t wear it eventually your teeth will become crooked again.

A cold facewasher/flannel feels good to bite down on gently.

Ice will be your best friend. Small chunks of ice sooth your sore gums and aching jaw temporarily, plus you get some water while you're at it

Don’t skimp on wearing bands every day (if you need them). My braces removal was postponed for a year. Get them off ASAP.

When you get canker sores (which you will), put wax over the brace that is touching it. What I've experienced is that this will smooth out the canker sore and make it less painful. Also, you will have to readjust it and replace it. And it will make your breath more stinky so be mindful of that. For people who play brass instruments and can't get that rubber piece to cover the braces, the first couple of seconds of pressing your braces on the canker sores there will hurt but the rest of the rehearsal will be fine. Also that part of the lip will be scarred for the rest of your life because it's pressed up against the mouthpiece so much. Hmmm....good luck!

>From my experience-NEVER LET THE BRAND NEW AND IN TRAINING DENTAL HYGIENIST PUT YOUR NEW BANDS AND WIRES ON! They were always too long and would stab my cheeks over and over. We were SUPER poor, so there were absolutely no unscheduled visits other than the one I had. So I’d have to sit and suffer through that visit.

Buy a travel size Waterpik. Doesn’t take up a ton of room on the counter and I can easily take wherever I go. So much easier than threading flossing.

Brush your teeth a lot. After every meal for sure. Buy several toothbrushes to keep in the places you are the most...the car, school, work, etc.

Popcorn... avoid it while you have braces!

Wear your rubber bands. They do a lot of shifting and not wearing them will significantly increase the time you have braces.

Do NOT use whitening toothpaste. You may think you aren't brushing well enough and think you will be left with white marks where the brackets were glued initially and then decide to use whitening toothpaste. However, when you get them off, you will have yellow marks where the brackets were. You will most likely need professional whitening at this point and strips will only make the problem more noticeable.

You have braces now. Or you soon will. Congratulations on taking this positive step toward your health and your appearance!

As dental professionals, here’s something we want you to know: Living life with braces takes some getting used to, but it will become easier with each day. And one day, you’ll have a beautiful, healthy, straight smile you’ll be so happy to show off to the world.

Our dentists have helped more than 10,000 patients with their teeth. So we has a lot of experience placing braces on both children and adults. And we've talked to a lot of people about what it’s like to wear braces.

At our dentist office, we want to give everyone the best experience possible — when you’re in our care and when you leave. That’s why we’ve gathered some useful tips you’ll need to follow while you’re wearing braces.

TIPS FOR LIVING LIFE WITH BRACES Yes, when you wear braces, you will need to make some lifestyle adjustments. But you’ll find it’s not that bad, especially when you think about how you’ll look in the future.

1 Smile. Even though you now have braces on your teeth, that shouldn’t hold you back from smiling with your mouth open. People will notice your mouth more if it looks like you’re hiding something. Also, it can be a great conversation starter. Many people have braces today, and it’s not something to be ashamed of.

2 For the first few days (and after you get your braces tightened), eat soft foods. Some examples of soft foods include scrambled eggs, oatmeal, pasta, smoothies, and soups. You also want to cut your food into small pieces.

3 You will likely feel some pain and discomfort the first week, but you can take action to find relief. A warm washcloth or a heating pad may reduce the soreness in your jaws. You can also take non-aspirin pain relievers. You may also want to put wax on the braces to lessen the discomfort, especially the first one to two weeks. Another thing you can do is to gargle with saline. To do this, take a glass of lukewarm water and add a teaspoon of salt. Swish and gargle with this solution for a few minutes to get rid of the pain. Then, spit out the salt water.

4 Avoid certain foods. Common sense will direct you in deciding what you foods you shouldn’t eat. You don’t want pieces of food getting stuck to your braces, so you should avoid hard, sticky, foods, and ones high in sugar. Sugary foods can cause decay and other oral problems. Only consume the following beverages once per day: soda, sweetened tea, Gatorade, Kool-Aid, and any other drinks with sugar. You also want to avoid foods you have to bite into, such as apples, corn on the cob, and chicken wings.

5 Don’t chew on foreign objects. This means pencils, pens, and your fingernails. Why? Because chewing on hard objects can damage or break your braces and lead to costly repairs. Ultimately, this will make your treatment take longer.

6 Don’t smoke. Tobacco use of any kind will stain your teeth.

7 Clean your braces after every meal and snack. To protect your teeth, you should wait at least one hour after eating to brush your teeth. And to help you even more, see our article about brushing your teeth with braces.

8 Floss every day. Floss every night before you go to bed. Using a floss threader will make this process easier with braces. It will allow you to get under the wires more easily.

9 Use an interdental toothbrush to clean your teeth and braces. We recommend Proxabrush to our patients with braces. This is an interdental toothbrush, which means it clean between the teeth. You can use it to clean underneath and around your wires and braces. But you want to make sure you are using it gently to avoid damaging your wires. This way you’ll be able to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

10 Use a mouthwash or rinse. We recommend Peroxyl, a hydrogen peroxide antiseptic mouth rinse, to our patients. It will reduce inflammation in your gums and cheeks and help your mouth heal. It also helps to prevent infection and decreases irritation. Irritation like canker sores, cheek bites, and other minor temporary injuries.

Here’s how it works: Rinse your mouth with two teaspoons of Peroxyl (half a capful) for one minute and then spit it out. You may use Peroxyl up to four times daily after brushing.

11 Use fluoride on your teeth daily. We recommend Phos-Flur, a sodium fluoride gel, to our patients. This gel helps prevent tooth decay by killing bacteria and replacing minerals in tooth enamel. You should use the gel after brushing and flossing at bedtime.

Here’s how it works: Place a small strip of Phos-Flur on a toothbrush and apply it to your teeth for one minute and then spit it out. After this, you should not drink or eat anything for 30 minutes because the active ingredient needs to stay on your teeth to work.

12 If you have a removable appliance, clean it every day. You want to brush your appliance as part of your regular brushing and flossing routine. Soak the appliance once daily because food particles and plaque can accumulate like they do on the teeth. Here’s how you do that: Dissolve a Polident, Efferdent, or other denture-cleaning tablet in a glass of water at room temperature and put your appliance in the glass.

13 Avoid whitening products while you are wearing braces. Your teeth will be whitened, but when the braces are removed, you will have spots on your teeth where the braces used to be. We know you don’t want that.

14 Make a cleaning kit and carry it with you. You won’t always be home when you need to clean your teeth and braces. Making a kit with a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, wax, and lip balm is a great idea.

15 Check your braces for bent or loose wires and brackets regularly. If you notice a loose or broken wire or bracket, you should call our office immediately to setup an appointment to repair your braces. If you need to cut a wire in case of emergency, you can use fingernail clippers that have been washed and sterilized in alcohol. In some cases, you can move the wire with a cotton swab or an eraser. You can also try covering it with a small piece of wax.

16 If your teeth begin to feel a little loose, this is normal. Your braces must loosen your teeth to move them into the right position. Then, when your teeth are repositioned, they won’t be loose.

17 If you have ceramic braces, avoid foods with tomatoes and tomato paste, mustard, coffee and dark-colored drinks. The red, yellow, or dark colors will stain your ceramic braces, and you don’t want that.

18 If you play sports in your braces, wear a mouthguard. Yes, you can play sports, but you should wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth and your braces.

19 Make sure you go to your follow-up appointments. When you wear braces, frequent follow-up appointments are needed to adjust your braces. Skipping appointments will only make your treatment take longer.

20 Remember: You won’t have braces for the rest of your life. In about 12 to 24 months, you will get your braces taken off. And if you’ve taken good care of them and your mouth, you will finally get to see your new look.
