Dave built the shelf underneath the window specifically to have a place to store the seedlings. This was the perfect door for this because it opens up on the side directly across from our three gardens. Dave put in a third raised garden bed this year so that each of the triplets could be in charge of a garden. The roof is slanted and since I didn’t want anyone to get conked on the head coming in or out of the shed by a can of Raid, I made a safety catch. Just underneath the garden shelves I bought two rolling plastic bins to store bird feed in. Once one is empty it will be no problem to clean it out and change the label and use it for whatever I need it for.
Dave wanted a clock in the shed, so we brought out one that he had in the basement and didn’t use much.
We will be hanging bikes in the winter, use under shelf space, above head space, door space etc. Don’t forget to link your organizing, cleaning or DIY posts to my Organizing Mission link party! Also I’m having a huge giveaway $100 prize total, blog makeovers and necklaces up for grabs to 4 winners. We had so much we had to get in this shed to open up space in our garage I had to make as much usable space as I could.
I am re-organizing my storage shed after a renovation and was looking for ideas, which is how I found your blog. It’ll make your home and function existence appears a lot more structured and if you use the storage sheds wisely after that your whole life may really feel much less cluttered.
I want to build a tool shed but don’t know where to start, I found the info here worthwhile, I will take a quick look at your web site to see if you can aid me. I'm a Professional Organizer, Mom and Step Mom to eight, and a Senior Content Manager for Collective Bias.
From playhouses to sheds to gazebos, find the plan that works for your outdoor space, and then build your own backyard retreat. There’s quite a few shelving how-to videos on YouTube, but I liked that one because it seemed simple and compact and could be built with full length materials.

I like how the shelves look, with the shelf surface extending a bit past the horizontal supports. I do, however, feel your joy at being able to take all the stuff that was cluttering up your other buildings and putting them in your lovely new shed. We use our Bosch job site table saw and a Craftsman circular saw to make the two cuts for our plywood surface. Fastening the shelf at every stud provides significant additional weight-holding capability, especially towards the back of the shelf.
With the middle shelf fastened, we construct and install the bottom shelf using the same technique.
The top plate of the wall is exposed in this style shed, and we decided we wanted our plywood shelf to cover it. And just as we had hoped, our five largest yard tools now fit neatly beneath our large work shelf. Stay tuned in the next few weeks for the shelving on the other side of the shed, and some nifty latching hooks we’ll be installing on the back of the shed to hang our shovels, rakes, and other gardening and lawn tools. You can strengthen the shelf by installing diagonal braces (available at the big box stores) from the studs to the shelf base. If you want a backsplash, you might consider installing peg board on the back wall before installing the shelves.
Seems you always need a pair of scissors and I must have used them a half dozen times while I was working in the shed this day.
I will use those at this point for potting soil and any odds and ends that might be too big for the shelves. I like the clock, I’d need that or I’d forget to come out of there if I were you! It looks great on the outside, but without some shelving and storage hooks for tools inside, most of the interior space would go to waste.
This helped us try out different articles to make sure the shelving heights worked for our storage goals. The table saw makes quick work of the rip cut, but the circular saw is a little easier to manage for the shorter cross-cut. We want the shelf to have a nice fit and finish, and getting the cuts right is essential for this.

This shelf has several horizontal cross members to keep the plywood from sagging in the center. We also decided that this shelf would be easier to install in place, rather than building it outside.
We should’ve snapped a pic before piling everything in the shed, but with the heat still beating down on us, we rushed the completion.
Changes in Google’s search algorithms coupled with the rise of literally thousands of home improvement-focused sites have made competition for readers fierce. So we collectively decided it was time for him to pursue new interests so he could make sure his family is taken care of! It certainly isn’t the future that we had hoped for with the site, but the site was a fantastic success for years, and we feel very proud that we were able to contribute in such a cool way to the web ecosystem.
One more place I used the Command hooks in this shed is just on the outside of the garden shelf (near the single door) I hung one for my dust pan. But fear not, the heat didn’t deter us from tackling our long-awaited shed storage shelves project. On deeper shelves where weight isn’t a major concern, 2x4s can be run front-to-back to avoid plywood sag. We measure below the surface of the top plate to find the right spot for the support 2×4. I generally use a Senco screwgun for anything major and I believe they do have the torx head drivers for those as well, but phillips seem to work pretty well (have to change the bit every couple hundred screws). These screws are more than sufficient for the weight loads we’ll be putting on these shelves. So starting with the smaller shelves meant we didn’t have any waste or have to make extra cuts. For a deep shelf, a third 2×4 could be placed at the middle of the shelf spanning side-to-side parallel to the front and back. They tons easier to drive and much more forgiving if you aren’t perfectly lined up straight.
