Here's an idea we haven't seen before: two picnic tables pushed together to form one large square table surrounded by benches. Above: The Classic Picnic Table with Black Legs is AUD $426 through Etsy (ships to US from Oregon).
Because the pieces need not travel together, the table and benches can be put into service in different places, for different purposes.
Here, a handful of pallets have been combined—with only slight modifications—to create a DIY picnic table. Katie Jackson and Lilah Crews-Pless submitted a tutorial for a table and bench set made entirely of scrap wood (minus the table legs, which were purchased new). A long trough running the length of the table, which can be used as a planter or filled with ice to keep drinks cold!


The picnic table in the construction pictures is one without the corners under 45 degrees like in the first picture.
I ended up moving them to the inside of the table and placing 2x3s joined as an L under the table legs to help the table from rocking and making it look more secure.
Though it has a relatively compact footprint, a picnic table provides plenty of seating, possibly even enough for every member of your crew.
