Thank goodness the industry invented Beano to help us begin to understand our digestive system and our body’s experience with beans. I have seen about 60% of my clients do well on beans, legumes & lentils after they properly soak these (12-24 hours), practice food combining principles, add digestive enzymes, take deeper breaths before eating and overall becoming more conscious on how food affects their bodies. A bean is just a seed of a certain variety of plant species, but these days we refer to the whole plant as beans.
Legumes contain anti-nutrients called lectins & phytic acids, which can cause stress on the intestinal lining and prevent vitamin and mineral absorption.
One of my favorite articles that breaks down the science behind the effects is by Chris Kresser, there is no way I could have done it better, it’s worth a read. The beans they are singing about in the video have high nutritional levels and provide up to 45 per cent of daily iron needs, which is 14 per cent more than commonly-grown bean varieties.
HarvestPlus does studies to ensure that their crop is making a difference – and then they hand the idea over to World Vision so we can scale it up in neighbouring countries. At the moment, World Vision is implementing bio fortified crops in more than 10 countries and we’ve had success in the past with crops like Vitamin A rich sweet potatoes in Uganda.
For example, in Burundi 92 per cent of the population grow and eat beans so we know there would be a big impact.
We look at the crop, where people are growing it, and how big the impact could be as well as a number of other factors before World Vision gets involved.

With the support of more than 400,000 Australians, World Vision helps more than 20 million people every year.
World Vision Australia is a Public Benevolent Institution and is endorsed as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) by the Australian Taxation Office.
World Vision Australia is an active member of the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) and adheres to the ACFID Code of Conduct which defines minimum standards of governance, management and accountability of development for non-government organisations (NGOs). Complaints relating to a breach of the ACFID Code of Conduct can be made to the ACFID Code of Conduct Committee. That means that when they pass into the large intestine, the bacteria that live there (nearly a thousand different kinds!)  take a look at all those chewed-up oligasaccharides and do a group attack on them. Painter Annibale Carracci painted a picture called The Bean Eater, which illustrates a similar point. The body does not digest and absorb some carbohydrates in the small intestine because of a shortage or absence of certain enzymes. If not, today is your lucky day – have a look at this video, produced by HarvestPlus to promote their bio-fortified beans! Not only do these projects address ‘hidden hunger’ or micro nutrient deficiency, they also help people get out of poverty by providing crops with better yield so farmers can take advantage of market prices.

They also have an extra advantage as they have proved to produce high yields, are resistant to viruses, and are heat and drought tolerant. As part of the process, HarvestPlus does research to figure out which countries will benefit most. Beans can be transported long distances so high iron beans grown in Burundi could be helping people in the slums of Tanzania who are more likely to be able to afford beans than meat. Beano contains the enzyme alpha-galactosidase, and if the food doesn’t completely digest it passes from the small intestine to the large intestine where bacteria breaks down the food, producing gas. Bio-fortification just means increasing the content of micro nutrients in a food, so that the food is more nutritious.
